SEATTLE — Amazon opened another door into the smart home by agreeing to purchase Ring, a Santa Monica, CA-based start-up maker of video doorbells.

Reuters reported the deal could be worth $1 billion.

“Ring is committed to our mission to reduce crime in neighborhoods by providing effective yet affordable home security tools to our neighbors that make a positive impact on our homes, our communities, and the world,” a Ring spokesperson said in a statement, reported by geekwire.com. “We’ll be able to achieve even more by partnering with an inventive, customer-centric company like Amazon. We look forward to being a part of the Amazon team as we work toward our vision for safer neighborhoods.”

Ring’s video doorbells, security cameras and other smart products would add to Amazon’s push in the home market, alongside the Alexa voice assistant and hub technology.

Amazon also already offers its own home security camera, Cloud Cam, alongside its Amazon Key app that allows Amazon Prime members to remotely give access to their home to service workers and package delivery drivers.

Amazon also acquired WiFi LED lighting startup Mr. Beams last month.
